Welcome to Het Spijker! Settle down with your friends in one of the many nooks and crannies that you can find in our building. More of a fan of the fresh outdoors? At Het Spijker you can choose from not one, but two terraces. You can enjoy the vibrant city center of Ghent at the front or choose the beautiful view of the Leie at the back. You can of course try an array of delicious Belgian beer, enjoy a refreshing cocktail or a home-made lemonade. Oh, and no rush, the doors don't close until the last visitor has left the bar.
WHAT'S IN THE NAME
Het Spijker is a bar with a past. Walk down the steps and into history. There has been a lot of activity in the historic building since the 13th century. It started out as a nursing home for lepers and plague victims. Later it became a cornstack house or "spijker." It was not until 1771 that several pubs found their home here: "In De Stad Leuven", "Het Engelsch Paard", "In den Pensenmarkt" and "In 't Goude Mandeke". Today, the first two bars form Café Het Spijker.
